The Sixteen Good Deities, depicting the origins of the Great Prajnaparamita Sect, are displayed as principal images at Daihannyakyo assemblies, which pray for good health, bountiful harvests, and peace throughout the world. It is said that the recitation of the Great Prajnaparamita Sutra protects people and grants great merit. Under the central canopy, the Shaka Triad—Shakyamuni Buddha, Fugen Bodhisattva riding a white elephant, and Manjusri Bodhisattva riding a lion—is placed. Two Bodhisattvas, Hoyu and Jotai, and Tripitaka Xuanzang and the demon general Jinsha Daijo face each other, surrounded by eight wrathful deities on each side. This painting became widespread throughout Japan during the Kamakura period.
