Shigaraki Ware, Hechimon, Kosei Kiln, Sitting Dog, Small, 40-4078

Shigaraki ware is pottery made in Shigaraki Town, a mountain village in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture. It is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns and has a history spanning over 1,200 years. Designated a traditional craft by the national government in 1976 (Showa 51), it features a variety of shapes and expressions born from nature and artisans, and is imbued with the sincerity and playfulness of masters who value "imbalance." The "Hechimon" (registered trademark) comes from a Shigaraki artisan's term meaning "unusual objects." These sculptures beautifully capture the strength and uniqueness of life. They are filled with Maekawa Yukio's gentle gaze on living creatures...and his love for pottery. This adorable dog figurine complements the rustic, rough clay.
