Japanese umbrellas are made from natural materials such as washi paper, bamboo, wood, linseed oil, lacquer, persimmon tannins, and tapioca. They are crafted by specialized bamboo frame artisans, washi paper artisans, and Japanese umbrella artisans, and take anywhere from several weeks to several months to complete. Each umbrella is handmade by a master artisan, who takes the time to craft it one by one.
Bangasa paper umbrellas have oil applied to the washi paper to make them waterproof, so you can enjoy their sheerness even on rainy days. After use, dry them in the shade thoroughly before storing them. We do not recommend using bangasa or Japanese paper umbrellas as parasols, as they do not provide long-term UV protection. Exposing an umbrella to sunlight will cause the oil applied to the washi paper to yellow and deteriorate.
With a paper umbrella, always keep your head up! When leaning the umbrella against something, make sure the handle is facing downwards and your head is facing upwards. The most important part of a Japanese umbrella is the top where the paper (raincoat) is placed. This is where the "wheel" is located, the wooden part that holds the bamboo together and forms the core of the umbrella. If the wheel rots due to rainwater or breaks due to impact, it is impossible to repair.
You can use dance umbrellas as photography accessories or interior decorations in stores and indoors. A single Japanese umbrella can create a gorgeous and vibrant impression, making it a great prop for photo shoots on special occasions like Shichi-Go-San. They can also be used for a wide range of purposes, including hobby dance, festival costumes, theater props, store decorations, displays, and cosplay.
