The sundial compass is a combination of two instruments, consisting of a portable sundial that is attached to the compass with a hinge. There are several adjustable feet that must be used to level the instrument if it is not on a level surface.
How to use - Before noon, you will need to measure clockwise from the clockwise hand; during the day, measure counterclockwise from the clockwise hand. So, for example, if it is four o'clock in the afternoon, point the hour hand at the sun, and south should be at the two o'clock mark.
A sun compass also tells the time. Turn the sundial so that the gnomon, or pin on the sundial that casts the shadow, points north if you are in the northern hemisphere, or south if you are in the southern hemisphere. Then watch how the shadow cast by the gnomon falls on the sundial. The number the shadow lines up with is the time.
