Their ninth original album, their first in about four years. The band threw out the rulebook and started making an album of songs with little structure or balance, just a mountain of riffs and a storm of energy. While they created an exciting and immediate sound, they put a lot of thought, introspection, and dream analysis into the lyrics. In the process, they excavated some of the staples of metal turf, such as serial killers, astral projection, and visits from the Grim Reaper, but they also incorporated confessional and deeply personal lines about the death of their father, mental illness, spiritualism, and being saved by having children. The unsettling cover suggests the turmoil bubbling beneath, projecting the worldview of this work.
