Bodhidharma, also known as the Bodhidharma ancestor or Bodhidharma, is an Indian Buddhist monk and the founder of Chinese Zen Buddhism. The name "Dharma" originally comes from the Sanskrit word for "law."
Born as a prince in South India, Bodhidharma went to China, but was not well-liked by the then Emperor Wu, and was sent to Shaolin Temple in Mount Song (which Emperor Wu later regretted). There is an anecdote that Bodhidharma spent nine years in Shaolin Temple practicing zazen facing a wall (facing the wall). He then took on disciples such as Huike and Yanlin, and Zen Buddhism spread throughout China.
Because of these actions and life of Bodhidharma, today Bodhidharma is revered as a symbol of indomitable spirit and the fulfillment of great wishes, and is an object of faith.
