Classical Japanese Translation of the New Testament (Small Vinyl Cover) JL44

The New Testament was completed in 1887 (Meiji 20). The Translation Committee, led by Hepburn and S.R. Brown, began translating the New Testament in 1874 (Meiji 7). The work was published in installments and completed in 1880 (Meiji 13). Meanwhile, the Standing Committee on the Bible was formed in 1878 (Meiji 11), and full-scale translation of the Old Testament began. The translation referenced the King James Version of the English Bible and the Bridgman-Culvertson Chinese translation. The entire translation was completed in 1887 (Meiji 20), and the following year, a historic celebration to celebrate its completion was held at Shin-ei Church in Tsukiji, Tokyo. Financial support was provided by the American, British, and Scottish Bible Societies. This is known as the "Meiji Translation" (original translation), and the Old Testament is still used today as a "literary translation." The "Meiji Translation" New Testament was subsequently revised and published in October 1917 (Taisho 6). It is known as the "Taisho Revised Translation.
