This wall clock is inspired by the ancient, rusted brass instruments once used for navigation and astronomical observation. The dial is created by thinly scraping away the colored surface, revealing the brass. The contrast between the brass and the color enhances the material's appeal while enhancing the dial's visibility. Its distinctive texture is the result of brass casting, a traditional industry in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, and the specialized coloring techniques applied to its surface. The clock is produced by traditional craftsmen. We were conscious of creating a design with a rich texture that would not look out of place even when hung on a wall with a strong texture, such as exposed concrete or brick. About the brass coloring: Each piece is colored using the rice bran-fired vermilion copper coloring technique, a representative traditional coloring technique for Takaoka copperware. The mottled black dye is achieved by using chemicals and heat to bring out the mottled pattern, followed by a black dyeing process. The mottled pure silver color is achieved by plating with pure silver. The mottled gas bronze color is achieved by developing a patina and then reacting it with ammonia gas to create the mottled gas bronze color.
