Hashima is an island at the southwestern tip of Nagasaki Prefecture where coal was mined. At its peak, it had the world's highest population density. It was also a bustling maritime city with state-of-the-art structures. Its landscape was likened to a battleship, hence the name "Gunkanjima" (Battleship Island). After the mine closed in 1974, landing was prohibited for a long time, but since 2009, landing has been permitted, and it has recently attracted attention as a power spot. In September 2008, it was listed on the World Heritage Tentative List as part of the "Modern Industrial Heritage Sites of Kyushu and Yamaguchi."
