Kyo-yaki (Kiyomizu ware) is one of Kyoto's most representative traditional crafts. Its origins are said to be due to the many kilns, including those of Kiyomizu Rokubei and Takahashi Michihachi, located around Gojozaka, the approach to Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Tenmoku ware was introduced to Japan during the Kamakura period and highly prized as tea ceremony utensils. Enjoy the diverse expressions of the glazes that captivate people. Because the glaze changes dramatically depending on the kiln and flame conditions, each piece has a unique hue and texture. As these pieces are handmade, slight variations in size may occur.
