The Work of Yoshiaki Nakamura

Founded by Nakamura Sotoji, a master carpenter and master carpenter representing the sukiya-style architecture of the Showa era, Nakamura Sotoji Construction has long served as a go-to place for the head of the Urasenke school of tea ceremony, and is an indispensable presence at renowned establishments such as Tawaraya Ryokan, Miyamaso, Wakuden, Kana Shojuan, and Fukiage. Nakamura Yoshiaki (1946-2022), the second-generation master carpenter of Nakamura Sotoji Construction, inherited the techniques and spirit of traditional sukiya while working with leading contemporary architects to pursue the "essence of harmony" appropriate for the modern era. This book explores the path of Nakamura Yoshiaki, his work, and his words as he struggled to go beyond the traditional sukiya framework.
