The Sixteen Good Deities, depicting the origins of the Great Prajnaparamita Sutra, are displayed as principal images at Great Prajnaparamita Sutra gatherings, which pray for good health, bountiful harvests, and peace throughout the world. It is said that reciting the Great Prajnaparamita Sutra protects people and grants great merit. Under the central canopy, the Shaka Triad is arranged: Shaka Nyorai, Fugen Bodhisattva riding a white elephant, and Manjusri Bodhisattva riding a lion. Two Bodhisattvas, Hoyu and Jotai, Xuanzang Tripitaka and the demon general Jinja Daijo, face each other, surrounded by eight wrathful 16 good deities on each side. This composition spread throughout Japan during the Kamakura period. Please display this traditional auspicious painting to pray for the fulfillment of your wishes. *Tendoku: The sutra title and mantra are read aloud while the sutra is opened wide, representing the reading of all 600 volumes.
