"Outdoor Products" is a brand founded in 1973 by the Altschul brothers in Los Angeles, USA. The brothers' shop was originally the first department store on the West Coast to handle military surplus and camping gear, and also had the equipment to repurpose military tarps into camping tents and backpacks. One day, they suddenly realized that while they stocked a wide variety of equipment useful for practical activities like skiing, canoeing, and mountain climbing, they lacked any products for everyday use by those involved in those activities. At the time, there were no products on the market that they could confidently recommend for everyday use to those who knew genuine gear. So, using the equipment they used to repurpose military tarps, they began making "outdoor product" bags. Because of this origin, their initial store's lineup was a strange one, with backpacks, sleeping bags, gaiters, rain ponchos, and other items lined up in a seemingly random fashion. Because they had long respected the finest gear, they avoided developing products that would compete with those brands, instead focusing on everyday items that those brands hadn't yet tackled. Eventually, Outdoor Products' production volume and employee numbers increased, but with the rise of labor unionism in the mid-1970s, labor costs per employee continued to rise. The only solution was to simplify the process for each product, and the resulting design became the foundation of Outdoor Products' simple daypacks, which continue to this day. Simply constructed with two parts and minimal stitching, yet made with durable Cordura fabric and YKK zippers, these daypacks, along with similarly simple Boston bags, were sold in university co-ops across the United States by the mid-1980s. Their stripped-back design easily complements any fashion and any age, and they soon became a favorite among many Americans. Today, Outdoor Products bags are popular and used in over 60 countries around the world. The birth of Outdoor Products daypacks was heavily influenced by the American period of rapid economic growth.
