Eternal Grooves is reissuing an upgraded version of the Paris show, originally released in 2017 and subsequently discontinued, as "Le Palais des Sports 1965" (EGSH-0001). Having become global idols with the hit film "A Hard Day's Night" the previous year, The Beatles finally embarked on a tour in June 1965, filming and recording for their second film, "Help!," before finally embarking on a tour in June. This performance was recorded from a master recording by a local broadcast station of two shows, one in the afternoon and one in the evening, in Paris on June 20, the first day of the tour. The Beatles, performing live for the first time in a long time, delivered a rousing performance, with both John and Paul going full throttle from the first track, "Twist and Shout." The excitement of being on stage for the first time in nearly five months was palpable. The Parisian audience also joined in "Can't Buy Me Love," singing along with a round-like chorus of "love~"s, creating a truly moving performance. The set included John on harmonica on "I'm a Loser," Ringo's "I Want to Be Your Boyfriend," and George's "All Good Girls," while also incorporating wild "rock and roll music" reminiscent of their Hamburg days. It also included the new-age rock number "I Feel Fine" and their latest track, "Ticket to Ride," featuring a fresh rhythm pattern. The track selection showcased their rapid growth over the past year, making for an irresistible performance.
The highlight of the album was the opening of "A Hard Day's Night," which began with the famous chords ringing out in time with the chants that erupted during John's MC. This may be the coolest moment in Beatles live performance history. The chants continued even after the final song, "Long Sally," conveying the excitement of the Parisian audience, who seemed reluctant to part ways. While the program was the same for both the afternoon and evening shows, there were also differences in the performance takes. The additional recording of the opening act featured Jeff Beck-era The Yardbirds among the French artists. This is a historic recording that truly conveys the energetic live performance of the Beatles at the time and their enthusiasm.
Includes Japanese liner notes detailing the situation at the time, anecdotes, and tracklist. Re-released from Eternal Grooves' "ROCK OFF" series!
