Product Introduction
Ace "1/35 Scale German Iltis Four-Wheel Drive Field Ambulance Type 183" Plastic Model Kit.
The Type 183, commonly known as the Iltis (German for polecat), was a military vehicle manufactured by Volkswagen for use by the German military.
The Iltis was also licensed and manufactured in Canada by Bombardier.
Since the late 1960s, the German military has participated in a cooperative effort with European countries to develop an amphibious four-wheel drive military vehicle known as the "European Jeep." However, due to rising costs and differing national requirements, this project was discontinued, and the Iltis was developed as a replacement.
Production began in the summer of 1978.
Most vehicles produced were open-top, four-door models, but ambulances, anti-tank vehicles, artillery reconnaissance vehicles, command and field communication units in various body styles were also produced.
