Johnny Depp stars as the Oscar-nominated Captain Jack Sparrow in the second installment of this action-adventure series. This time, even the unlucky Jack faces a life-threatening threat. When he acquired the Black Pearl, he made a pact to dedicate himself to Captain Davy Jones. That pact is finally coming to an end. This sequel to the first film delivers superb performances from the main cast. From his first appearance to the action scenes where he's pursued by cannibals, Johnny is sure to keep you laughing.
The highlights are undoubtedly Captain Jones's appearance and the giant octopus he controls, the Kraken. The whiskers growing from his mouth sway like octopus tentacles, making the captain's movements eerie. The Kraken's attack, which makes full use of VFX, is dynamic, but also evokes a sense of nostalgia that suits the word "monster." What's refreshing about this sequel is that Jack begins to show signs of humanity in the second half. Scenes that show the delicate relationship between Will and Elizabeth as a couple, and his pride as a pirate, exude a coolness that wasn't present in the first film. I'm impressed by Johnny's blend of ease, playfulness, and aura as an actor, and I can't wait to see how the surprising ending will carry over to Part 3. (Saito Hiroaki)
