Formal Shingon Buddhist prayer beads typically consist of 108 main beads, plus two parent beads and four guardian beads (tenju). A small bead between one of the disciple beads and the parent bead is called a "jomeiju" (purifying bead). The parent bead on the side with the jomeiju is called the "hato-dama" (mother bead), and the parent bead on the opposite side is called the "odome" (cord stopper).
