The Four Heavenly Kings guard Mount Sumeru, the center of the Buddhist world, from all four sides. Jikokuten (national security) guards the east, Zochoten (abundant harvests) the south, Komokuten (clairvoyance) the west, and Tamonten (protector of Buddhism) the north. Each of the Four Heavenly Kings is carved in the dignified form of a Chinese warrior, standing with one face and two arms. They wear armor, wield weapons, and display angry expressions as they press down on the head or stomach of an evil spirit. Evil spirits are said to symbolize the worldly desires that dwell within the human heart. Tamonten (Bishamonten) is a war god and guardian deity counted among the Four Heavenly Kings, along with Jikokuten, Zochoten, and Komokuten. In addition to being one of the Four Heavenly Kings, he is also worshipped as a separate deity in Central Asia, China, and other regions outside of Japan. While there are various depictions of his appearance, in Japan he is commonly depicted as a Tang Dynasty warrior clad in leather armor. The object he usually holds is a pagoda. He is also often seen riding on a demon-like being called a Jaki. However, the statues of the Four Heavenly Kings at the Kaidan Hall of Todaiji Temple are depicted holding a pagoda in his right hand and a staff in his left. In esoteric Buddhism, he is one of the twelve heavenly gods and is said to protect the north. In a uniquely Japanese belief, he is also considered one of the Seven Gods of Fortune, and is believed to bring particular benefits in competitions.
To be worshipped.
