David Lynch, a genius director who left his mark on film history, passed away in January 2025 despite his overwhelming talent as the "King of Cults." This masterpiece is a cinematic adaptation of Frank Herbert's epic science fiction novel, previously considered impossible to film, using Lynch's unique visual aesthetics. While it underperformed both commercially and critically upon its release, and there are anecdotes suggesting it was a disappointing work for Lynch, it has long been revered as a cult film among movie fans. The terrifying design of the sand worms, the hideous appearances of the characters, and the unknown, creature-like characters... This film is a quintessential example of David Lynch's world at its peak, and Lynch's meticulous attention to detail creates a unique and unforgettable visual experience!
★A legendary masterpiece packed with Lynch's world is now available in a 4K remastered UHD edition with exclusive bonus features, available only in Japan!
Dune (1984) tackled the seemingly impossible task of adapting Frank Herbert's epic science fiction novel into a film. Dino De Laurentiis, the renowned producer behind films like King Kong (1976), selected David Lynch, the talented director who had achieved success with Elephant Man (1980), for the project. A massive budget was invested. 40 years after its Japanese release—while the "remake trilogy" directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Timothée Chalamet is gaining attention, it's revived in a 4K remastered UHD edition with luxurious bonus features!
★A star-studded cast and crew!
This film, the movie debut of Kyle MacLachlan, who would later become an icon of Lynch's works such as "Twin Peaks" (1990), also features Sting and music by Brian Eno and Toto.
★A film that has long been revered as a cult movie among film fans!
The Lynchian touch is captivating in every detail, from the sandworms and the eerie creature designs by Carlo Rambaldi (of "Alien" (1979) and "E.T." (1982)) to the hideous appearances of characters like Baron Harkonnen.
●Story
In the year 10191 AD, the universe was under the rule of Emperor Shadham IV. The planet Arrakis was the only planet where the immortality drug Melange was produced, and the Emperor was plotting to control it. Sensing this, a Space Guild navigator visits the Emperor to question him. The Emperor resented Duke Leto Atreides, who had developed the "Modules," weapons that amplified voices to destroy matter. He initially granted Leto Arrakis, intending to use Baron Harkonnen, an enemy of the Duke, to bring about his downfall. However, the Navigator believed the Duke's son, Paul Atreides, was the real threat and ordered his assassination. Upon arriving on Arrakis, the ducal family was attacked by an army arranged by Baron Harkonnen, forcing Paul and his mother, Jessica, to flee into the desert. They joined a group of the Arrakis natives, the Fremen, and, by providing them with the Modules, organized a large army. Paul controlled giant sandworms, systematically destroying Baron Harkonnen's forces. Eventually, after drinking the Fremen's "Water of Life," Paul became a superhuman and challenged the Emperor to a final battle.
