Kurume Kasuri has many unique characteristics that make it one of a kind in the world, including: ① drawing the design on special design paper, ② the shared binding machines and the skills of binding artisans within the production cooperative, ③ the inheritance of advanced techniques for weaving warp and weft kasuri on power looms, and ④ the coexistence of indigo dyeing and chemical dyeing. It is a representative traditional craft textile of Japan that was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan in 1957.
