■The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra (Ceska filharmonie) is an orchestra based in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. It is one of the world's leading orchestras.

Founded in 1986 with Dvořák as conductor for its first concert, it has built its unique character as the "country of strings," with outstanding Czech conductors serving as principal conductors. In 1908, Mahler conducted the world premiere of his own Symphony No. 7, "Song of the Night," and it is still fresh in our memories that in January 1998, Vladimir Ashkenazy was appointed as the new principal conductor, surprising the world.

◆The orchestra gained worldwide fame during the Václav Talich era (1919-1931 and 1933-1941). Successors to Talich include Rafael Kubelík (1941-1948), Karel Ančerl (1950-1968), Václav Neuma (1968-1989), Jiří Bělohlávek (1990-1992), and Gerd Albrecht (1993-1996). Vladimir Ashkenazy took over the position in 1998, and Zdeněk Mácal became principal conductor on September 1, 2003. Charles Mackerras is currently serving as principal guest conductor.
