A product inspired by the original Speed Timer model, characterized by its unique dial color, has been released. The iconic bright yellow dial and the aluminum bezel display with red and blue tachymeter markings are designed based on the original model from 1
969.
Original model details: On November 16, 1973, NASA astronaut William Pogue carried it in the pocket of his space suit pants as he boarded the Saturn rocket. This watch was one of the world's first automatic chronographs, the Seiko Caliber 6139 from the "Five Sports Speed Timer" series, which Seiko began selling in the spring of 1
969. Pogue purchased it at a base exchange. Although Seiko's watches were not officially recognized by NASA, at the time flight training began, no official watches had been issued to astronauts, so Pogue used the Seiko during his training. "I found this Seiko very useful for timing rocket engine burn durations using the rotating bezel," Pogue said, and he decided to take it as his personal item for the mission, thinking he would like to use it in space. During the actual mission, he wore a NASA-certified watch on his right wrist and the Seiko on his left. Despite lacking specifications to withstand space conditions, it reportedly kept accurate time in a zero-gravity environment.
The watch Pogue chose features a vibrant yellow dial, and even nearly 50 years after its release, its vivid design remains attractive and does not feel outdated. Pogue orbited the Earth 1,214 times during the Skylab 4 mission and successfully completed a record-setting 84-day space station mission. He continued to wear this watch long after removing his space suit, but in 2008, he decided to auction it off, donating the entire proceeds to the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation.
