Product Description: Edo Wooden Chopsticks Daikokuya Daikokuya's chopsticks are crafted by skilled artisans with a focus on quality. In the past, wooden chopsticks were mostly round or square. The owner of Daikokuya, Mr. Takeda, traveled nationwide for business and had the opportunity to see various chopsticks but couldn't find one that felt right in his hands. Wanting a comfortable pair, he asked a chopstick craftsman to make them, but no one could create them as he envisioned. This led to the decision to make them himself, marking the beginning of Daikokuya. Initially, he created octagonal chopsticks, which are closer to round and easy to grip. Later, he realized that since the number of fingers holding chopsticks is odd, pentagonal chopsticks fit perfectly in hand. Further experimentation with a heptagonal design resulted in chopsticks that felt just right, fulfilling his vision. However, crafting odd-sided chopsticks is challenging compared to even-sided ones, which have parallel surfaces for guidance. Additionally, working with hard woods like striped ebony made it difficult to carve them thinly by hand. The tips of the chopsticks, which touch the mouth, greatly influence ease of use and are the most difficult to shape. A slight error in the plane can ruin the entire process, requiring precise control and technique. Unlike spoons or forks, chopsticks must be a perfect pair, and each one is handmade, requiring consistency across hundreds of pieces. Ultimately, it took two years to bring them to market. The name "Edo Wooden Chopsticks" was trademarked by Mr. Takeda in 1999 to distinguish them from chopsticks made in other regions. Daikokuya continues to produce over 200 types of chopsticks, including pentagonal, octagonal, and heptagonal designs, as well as specialized chopsticks for ramen and natto.
