Uwajima Castle is located in the deepest part of the Uwa Sea. Built in 1596 (Keicho 1) on the site of the former Itajima Marukushi Castle, it was constructed in the Oda-Toyotomi style around 1601 (Keicho 6) by Todo Takatora as his first residence.
Takatora was later transferred to Kokubu and began construction of Imabari Castle in 1602 (Keicho 7).
After Takatora, Tomita Nobutaka ruled, and in 1614 (Keicho 19), Date Masamune's eldest son, Hidemune, took over, and the place name was changed from Itajima to Uwajima.
In 1676 (Kanbun 6), the second lord, Munetoshi, rebuilt the watchtower-style keep originally constructed by Takatora into the three-story, three-tiered tower-style keep that remains today, and carried out a major renovation of the castle.
