Shigaraki ware is pottery made in Shigaraki Town, Koka City, Shiga Prefecture. It is counted as one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns and is said to have a long history dating back over 1,200 years. Shigaraki ware was designated a traditional craft by the government in 1976. The name "hechimon" comes from a Shigaraki artisan's word meaning "unusual objects." These vessels have a variety of expressions, just like the various shapes created by nature and the individual personalities of each of us.
