A masterpiece of incense from Awaji Island's incense makers: Agarwood Incense Sticks, Agarwood Sweet Tea Incense, 105g, Crafted by Awaji Umekundo.
This incense, "Amacha-ko," uses carefully selected sweet tea, the same tea used to celebrate the birth of Buddha on April 8th by pouring it over the statue of the infant Buddha.
Unlike incense used for personal enjoyment, incense sticks offered as tributes are traditionally used by deities and Buddhas. The proper etiquette is to first offer a beautiful and favored incense to the Buddha, then make a request, and finally receive the offerings.
It is believed that during Obon, when ancestors who have transformed from their ego into Buddhas return, people should be beautifully made up (performing a celebratory dance similar to Kagura) and offer a feast to the Buddhas as part of the Obon festivities. This is said to grant the Buddhas' wishes for a feast, bringing their blessings to the deceased and their families, and bringing peace to the world.
The sweet tea incense, a specialty of the Obon festival, is said to grant the Buddha's wishes, as it opens the eyes of attentiveness, consideration, and thoughtfulness, builds a mountain of moral tradition, maintains order that respects elders, becomes selfless and acts of altruism, and allows descendants to direct good deeds toward their ancestors, thus fulfilling their wishes. Extending the measure of compassion in how we treat our ancestors who have returned as Buddhas, we offer the sweet tea incense, a favorite of the Buddha, as part of the Obon festival, welcoming guests with dignity and sincerity in a grand hospitality.
Showing attentiveness, consideration, and thoughtfulness by offering a meal brings immense merit, refining and elevating one's character. It fulfills the Buddha's wish for a meal.
