Product Introduction
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's new submarine, the "Soryu," is the first domestically produced submarine to be equipped with an AIP (Air-Independent Propulsion) system.
To improve stealth capabilities, the hull and sail are covered with sound-absorbing tiles, and the rudder employs an X-shaped rudder, which offers high underwater maneuverability and a low risk of damage.
Furthermore, features such as a flow-straightening fillet on the forward part of the sail give it a different appearance from existing vessels.
Of the 12 "Soryu" class submarines, the 11th vessel, "Oryu," and the 12th vessel, "Toryu," commissioned in 2020, are equipped with the AIP system and lithium-ion batteries instead of lead-acid batteries, further improving their underwater operational capabilities.
