Tango no Sekku, a familiar festival celebrated as Children's Day, is said to have originated in the Kamakura period. It became a festival for boys as it is today because iris, believed to be a medicinal herb that wards off evil spirits, is associated with the martial arts (respect for military might), and thus became a festival for boys. May dolls are made with wishes for boys' strong, healthy growth and the prosperity of the family, but Yakushi Kiln's May dolls, featuring Momotaro and Kintaro, can also be enjoyed as seasonal decorations.
